My Review:
This was my first book by Karina Halle – I was drawn in by the storyline, something different than I’m used to, I’ve not read many ‘cowboy’ books, but this intrigued me!!
Wild Card is the first standalone in the new North Ridge Series, this is told in dual perspective and and goes from ‘past to present’ in the telling of the story, which I think really added to the plot – a second chance romance, this is Shane and Rachel’s story.
Rachel moved to North Ridge when she was nine, and immediately formed a lasting friendship which turned into a relationship with Shane. Their bond in undeniable, they did everything together, shared all their firsts together, thought they would be together forever. Until he broke her heart and she fled away from town. Its been six years since she’s been back, but her mother has developed cancer, and she goes back to help. But North Ridge is the last place she wants to be – she has bad memories from here, her relationship with her mother is virtually non-existent, and her ex still lives there, the man she has grown to hate, yet can’t stop thinking about and comparing other men to, even though he broke her heart into a million pieces.
This is a great second chance read with some really great characters in here. I really connected with Rachel and Shane, and felt for them as the story unfolds. Friendship, love, innocence, lies, deceit, heart break, forgiveness…. this storyline has it all!
I loved Rachel who portrayed herself as such a strong character, yet had been wronged by the ones that were supposed to love her and care for her. Shane is stunningly handsome, quiet, intense, a hard working cowboy through and through, knows what he wants and will move heaven and earth to get it. The love they share is raw and wild, full of emotion.
I loved it!! It was a great read, a slow burn with a great story behind it. I can’t wait to read more books in the North Ridge series.
