An Angel. A Witch. A Demon. And A Choice.

Creatures from outer realms suck, as any gatekeeper worth their salt will tell you. Welcome to Rogan’s life, an orphaned seventeen-year-old who lives and trains with other misfits under her uncle’s roof, keeping Earth safe from non-human realm jumpers. Rogan’s biggest issue concerns her uncle’s short leash with her freedom—that is of course, until she’s taken by a notorious witch, and her life begins to unravel. Soon, the supernatural beauty discovers there’s a reason her uncle kept such a tight lock on her whereabouts, and that she has more than angel blood running through her veins.

Eighteen-year-old Max is an angel, and Rogan’s mentor and guardian. He’s well aware of her tenacious inability to obey orders, though he also knows she’s a fierce fighter. When he’s involved in a scheme that ultimately gets Rogan kidnapped, he must battle his way back to her in an attempt to save her from the darkness threatening to possess her.

My Review:

This was my first book by Cathrina, I was intrigued by the blurb – it looked to be a good dose of paranormal with a mix of young adult – now YA is not really my thing, but I liked the sound of the story and so gave it a go.

The story centers around Rogan, orphaned and raised by Castle to be a Gatekeeper along with a group of other young adults, all with special powers, in an attempt to keep unwanted beings out of Earth’s realm. Castle tries to keep her on a tight leash, but Rogan has a mind of her own and is always sloping off in a chance to prove herself. Her guardian and trainer is Max, who unwittingly ends up leading her into a position where she gets kidnapped by a powerful witch, and starts to learn more about her family, her parentage and her abilities – things get a bit chaotic for her and she has choices to make that will decide the fate of the realms.

There is a great mix of characters in this book, all unique and different, along with a whole host of creatures from angels and demons, to witches and pixies and some I hadn’t encountered before! Its the age old fight of good against evil, lots of action, magic, fighting and a touch of romance. Its also very much a ‘coming of age’ as Rogan develops more magic and special abilities very quickly. I enjoyed the settings and the different realms and the idea of being able to teleport between them.

Overall a good read that I enjoyed, it kept me entertained with its plot twists, and there’s definitely scope for further books out of this.
