About Broken Drift:
Holding on to regret is poison and I take mine straight up. Fast cars and even faster women—they’re my drug of choice. Until I barely survive a crash that destroys my career. Now I’m staring my past in the face and she’s even more beautiful than when I walked away.
I’m wildly clutching at what’s left of my shattered life after a failed marriage when he shows up at my rehab facility. I didn’t think my life could get any worse. Now the one man who has the power to destroy me completely is asking me to heal his broken body.
Some things need to stay broken.

Everything comes to a crashing halt as I smash into the concrete barriers edging the track.
Ringing in my ears.
Shuddering and grinding of metal.
Stars pop and explode in my eyes.
Shock of the abrupt stop.
As my senses slowly return, the first thing I hear is my ragged breathing and the whoosh of blood in my ears made louder by my helmet. I’m alive. The windshield is cracked and the roof has split away from the body on the passenger side. The pinging and hiss of coolant and liquids escaping their reservoirs to flow over the hot engine comes next. Shit. My engine is off. Without thinking, I reach forward to get the ignition to fire, but my arm won’t respond to my brain’s signal. I try again, stopping instantly when pain explodes into my awareness.
Well, fuck, that’s an injury. Okay, mental body check. I wiggle my toes, and manage to move my feet. I pick up my knees a little. I rotate my head and find I’m already fucking sore, but I can move my neck just fine. It’s only my right arm that’s fucked, I think.
Lights flash past my window and stop. Motherfucker. I’m gonna get carted off the track in an ambulance unless I pull myself out of this. I unstrap and do my best to get out of the constricting harness. I push open the door and slowly climb out of the car one-handed. A roar erupts from the crowd as I look up. Everyone in the stands is cheering and pushing toward the railing nearest where I hit. I tuck my right arm into my side and wave with my left.
Yeah, I’m fucking alive.
I use my good hand to pull my helmet off and take a deep breath that drags through my lungs and stirs the anxiety pooling in my belly. This is fucking bad.
“Sir, can you hear me? We need you to come with us.” I look toward the voice and find a uniformed paramedic holding out his blue-gloved hands to guide me to the back of the waiting ambulance.
“Gimme a minute.” The ringing in my ears makes it hard to tell just how loud I’m speaking. I walk past the EMS guy toward the back of the 350Z, taking in another deep breath.
The Beast is trashed. The entire right side is smashed in from colliding with the wall and the back end of the car is literally gone. It’s in pieces strewn for ten feet along the wall behind where I came to a stop. I must have hit back-end first and then rotated to the side and skid along the wall. The roof is lifted off the body over the passenger door, and as I come closer around the back, I see the right back quarter panel is torn and the back wheel bent and falling off.
Jesus Christ. The damage is unreal. How am I walking away from this? Thank fuck for proper safety equipment that does its job.
My eyes are drawn back to the wreckage. Near the front of the car a single black feather floats to rest on a torn off chunk of bumper. I was just thinking about her and now this? Mother fucker. Dawning awareness of my injuries and pain that is unreal makes me nearly crumple.
“Sir, we need to check you out now.” Paramedic dude is back, this time placing a hand firmly on my back, leading me away from my broken car.
Leading me away from the future I just pissed away. Again.
