Title: Layback

Author: Jennifer Rebecca

Genre: Sports Romance

About Layback:

Not too long ago, I had one goal: Win an Olympic Gold Medal but an injury took me out of the running for the Ladies Figure Skating competition at the last Olympic Games. Nancy Kerrigan was grandfathered in. I was not.

Translation: I was disqualified. DQ’d. I was out in the cold on my keister.

But when an offer to fill a spot on a pairs team lands in my lap, I take it. It seems like an answered prayer—that is until a competitor is found brutally murdered in her room at the competitor’s village and my partner is the number one suspect.

I’m going to have to take matters into my own hands. Again. Sweet Kristi Yamaguchi, save me from overly cocky men.

My name is Sophia Eleonore Dubois and holy mother of Dorothy Hamill my life is still complicated . . .

Bachelorettes and Big Thunder Oh my!

Twenty minutes later . . .

“You guys can come back in now,” Kane says as he holds the doorway open for the party of hooligans also known as our closest friends to enter.

“Hey, girl,” Shelby says to me on a smile as walks in. Trent is right behind her wearing the most ridiculous smile I have ever seen in my life on his face. That can only mean bad things for Kane. Uh oh.

“What are you guys doing here?” I ask the room at large.

“Well, we were here to support you, obviously,” Shelby answers.

“But now that the German ho got whacked and everything’s on hold we decided to come hangout with our girl,” Daisy finishes.

“Plus, you went and got yourself hitched to that fine specimen of man meat over there,” Verna says as she hitches a thumb towards Kane and I roll my lip into my mouth and bite it to keep from laughing. By the looks of him, Trent is not exercising that level of restraint.

“Seriously,” Marla adds. “I hadn’t ever gotten a good look at his ass before. But if I was thirty years younger—”

“More like forty years younger,” Verna cackles. “And then you’d still be a cougar.”

“Thanks, asshole,” Marla replies to her best friend. “If I was forty years younger and still had two good hips, I’m not sure if I could live through that kind of pounding. But I’d love to try.”

“Here, here!” Verna agrees.

“Nana!” Trent admonishes but his sweet grandmother just shrugs her shoulders in a what-are-you-going-to-do-about-it kind of a way and joins in the laughter.

“Thanks, ladies,” Kane says sweetly. “I think.”

“Oh,” Marla replies. “It was definitely a compliment.”

My face burns bright red with mortification and I wonder if the Earth could please open up and swallow me whole right now. That would be great. I realize when Verna replies that I didn’t keep those thoughts in my head but instead shared them allowed.

“But if the Earth swallows you whole you can’t get boned like that again,” she adds not at all helpfully and everyone laughs.

“Granny!” Shelby yells.

“What?” Verna chimes back.

“You embarrassed Sophie!”

“Oh, pish posh,” she says. “Sophie knows how much we love her and besides it’s true.”

“You guys love me?” I ask in a small voice and everyone turns to me with soft faces.

“Of course we love you,” Shelby answers on a soft voice. “You’re one of us.”

“That’s right, darling girl, you’re a Dangerous Dame now and the only way out is toes first,” Marla says.

“Jesus, Nana,” Trent groans. “Stop threatening death.”

“I’m not threatening anything,” she says. “Being a Dame is dangerous work. I mean come on, it’s in the name!”

About the Author:

Jennifer is a thirty something lover of words, all words: the written, the spoken, the sung (even poorly), the sweet, the funny, and even the four letter variety. She is a native of San Diego, California where she grew up reading the Brownings and Rebecca with her mother and Clifford and the Dog who Glowed in the Dark with her dad, much to her mother’s dismay.

Jennifer is a graduate of California State University San Marcos where she studied Criminology and Justice Studies. She is also an Alpha Xi Delta.

10 years ago, she was swept off her feet by her very own sailor. Today, they are happily married and the parents of a 8 year old and 6 year old twins. She can often be found in East Texas on the soccer fields, drawing with her children, or reading. Jennifer is convinced that if she puts her fitbit on one of the dogs, she might finally make her step goals. She loves a great romance, an alpha hero, and lots and lots of laughter.
