My best recipes come out of moments of spontaneity.

Mixing a goody-two-shoes baker with a detective who has questionable morals is a recipe for disaster.
– Holden Cross
Savvy
A random order for a loyal customer introduced me to the man of my dreams. It also led me to a moment of great devastation. I can’t believe both are the result of knowing the same man. I don’t know if we’ll be able to come back from this.
I’m seriously screwed.
Cross
Lies. Confusion. Secrets. All have become second nature in my world. I live this life and think nothing of the effect it has on others. Until her. She enters and demanded more. More than any other has asked of me.
More lies, a rumor, then the truth. F*cked that up royally.
*Formerly titled Hot Cross Buns
“Are you kidding me? He did not choose this,” I exclaim as I look at the card to see what the man chose as his winning treat.
That doesn’t sound dirty. Remember him calling you his treat.
Nope. Not doing that. That’s part of the problem. Business only. Get in. Get out. Get her done.
That’s what he said. Or will say.
I hate my life and my runaway thoughts. This is insane! Shaking myself, I focus on the matter at hand.
“He did. Apparently, he’s just as much a fan of it as you are.”
I think I hate my friend too. I don’t, but I would really like to punch her in the titty bags right about now.
“Shut your face, Chas!” I growl as I finish the email then send it.
Within seconds, my computer chimes indicating I have a response which causes Chastity and Aaliyah to laugh.
“Guess he knows you better than you think he does.”
Huffing, I roll my eyes then stalk away from the computer screen where his response is still pulled up.
“I’m going to my office. I have things to do.”
They all laugh as soon as the kitchen door closes behind me.
I need my friend. She’d make me feel better about all of this or at least be on my side of things. I need to speak to her as soon as possible. This man is going to make me lose my mind if I let him get the better of me. I’m dialing the number well before I even enter my office. Her glee-filled greeting makes me smile despite the feelings I’m feeling inside.
“Slutty Savvy! Good gravy, I’ve missed the hell out of you! How are things?” Taryn looks up from whatever she was just doing to make a face at me. “Oh no, what’s wrong? You’ve got that weird ‘w’ in the middle of your forehead. What’s on your mind? Don’t tell me you’re worried about something.”
“I both love and hate the fact that you know me well enough to know that about me, Terrifying Taryn.”
If it didn’t make me feel weird, I swear I’d hug the damn phone.
“That seals it. There’s something wrong if that’s the best name you could come up with,” Taryn says, she lifts one of the twins and puts him on her hip.
“That damn … dang Cross has me losing all parts of my mind. Now, I have to go and face the … butternut squash. I told myself I’d steer clear of him so I can get over him. Now, I have a feeling my team is working with him to give him an opportunity he wouldn’t otherwise have.”
She nods then smiles.
“Sounds like the Rainbow Crew cares more about the heart and mind of their boss, not just how well she treats them. Given how you behaved with them before, I’m surprised any of them are talking to you.”
I glare at my phone and wish I was standing in front of her so I can show her just how irritated I am with her words.
“Yes. Oh. Right. BTW, thanks for your part in getting me back to myself,” I state sincerely. “Now, when I’m finally resembling my old self, my supposed friends want to send me into the lion’s den where there is possibility for a relapse.”
Taryn nods her head then bites her lip. I can tell she’s fighting a laugh.
“Do you really believe they would do the whole ‘lion’s den’ thing? Or is it you’re not ready to face the truth?”
I gasp then lean back. I’m not appreciating this line of questioning. She’s supposed to support me here.
“What truth is that?”
“You’re in love with the man and scared shitless to open yourself up to him again.” Her words have the desired effect. I am speechless. “Judging by that pause, I’m right. Just so you know, I think he’s a great guy. He’s also kind of perfect for you. That’s in spite of everything the two of you have already been through. This one might just be worth it, Sweets.”
There I had it. Whiskey Taryn had just given her stamp of approval and was ready to hand me over to the man who practically broke me.
