My ARC Review:
I really loved The Brit by Jodi, but The Enigma takes it to a whole new level….. this has got to be one of my top favourite reads of this year!! It’s raw and intense, passionate and downright dirty, with a level of suspense that will have you on the edge of your seat!
James is a stone cold killer with one thought on his mind… revenge at the murder of his family. He is tracking The Bear, no one knows who is is, but James has a list of people connected with him that he is slowly taking out in the hope of eventually finding him, getting his revenge for his family.
Beau was a cop and all set to be joining the FBI, until a explosion killed her mother and injured her. She is not really living, she is grieving and numb to everything around her except hate and resentment for losing her mum, who she knows was murdered, but it has been passed off as an accident.
Beau’s mum was a top FBI agent who had been trailing James and he was on the top of her wanted list, but she had some intel on him when she died. James thinks that maybe Beau knows stuff about him, stuff she shouldn’t know, and with her keep prodding to get her mother’s case reopened he needs to find out once and for all, before his cover is blown.
Both Beau and James are broken, both living in a darkness that they cannot escape from. Yet put them together and they both find something in each other that gives them something that they are missing, like a balm to the soul.
James is so very Alpha, cold, brutal, devastating, British and unrelenting……. wow, talk about a hot male character, who’s skills in the bedroom were just as deadly….. steaming hot dirty scenes in this one, enough to set your panties on fire!
Beau is lost, full of resentment, unable to live a normal life, suffers with panic attacks and has different coping mechanisms to deal with her everyday life. But being with James, being shrouded in his darkness, she is able to submit and let herself and her fears go, the only time she gets any peace is when she is with James. Underneath she is still the same cop, full of skills and intelligence, brave and fiery, never giving up.
The storyline had me hooked, I loved the twists and turns in the plot, of which there were many, always throwing you for a loop when you thought you had cracked it! There were some great side characters in her also, I loved Otto and Goldie and the fabulous Lawrence/Zinnea.
It’s dark and brutal at times, their connection is insanely hot and the erotic nature had me gasping with the intensity of it all. Angsty and emotional as well in areas, it’s definitely a bit of a rollercoaster of a ride. I wasn’t expecting the bit of a cliffy ending, so now I am impatiently waiting on the next book, roll on Jan ’22!
