While not considered a dark romance, there are darker themes such as attempted rape (not by the hero), emotional abuse and trauma (also not by the hero), and parental neglect. It is book one of the Shadow Pack trilogy, and while it doesn’t end with a true cliffhanger, there are unanswered questions.

My ARC Review:
This was a great read and a fab start to this trilogy – a fated mates / omegaverse / shifter read with hybrid shifters! Lots of action, a hot alpha protective male and hot steamy passion with knots!
Adrienne has always felt a bit lost in her pack, like she didn’t quite fit. The only plus was her best friend Zade, the son of the Alpha of Willow Creek pack, who she grew up with. They find out at a young age that they have been betrothed and will be married at some later stage. But Adri has a bit of a wild streak in her, she has been brought up by her family as an Omega, to submit and do as she’s told, but that doesn’t always feel right to her, and so has trained to fight like a male Alpha without her parents’ knowledge, only Zade knows and has helped her with this.
The Willow Creek pack have a treaty with the Shadow Wolf pack, their leader and his pack being renown for the dark and violent ways. The treaty is due to be renewed and so the pack leader comes to visit. Her wolf is unsettled and clawing at her to get out, when the Alpha of Shadow Pack, Phoenix arrives, she knows instantly that he is her fated mate. But she knows she cannot leave her family and bring shame on them by being associated with him, and so he rejects her as his fated mate.
Phoenix has never done anything as hard as walking away from Adri, but has done it for her, to keep her safe. But things spiral out of control after he has rejected her setting into motion a series of events that will change both their lives.
A brilliant read, I enjoyed how the Shadow Pack worked, the proper family surrounding Phoenix – the pack go off their animal instincts and are not restrained, so when Adri goes in heat expect some very hot steamy omegaverse scenes with Phoenix. There is a touch off non-consent in this so be warned. I loved Phoenix and his very protective ways – Adri sure knows how to push his buttons to get him all hot and bothered! Looking forward to the rest of the series to see how it’s all going to play out! Definitely worth the read for any shifter fans.
