Blurb:

From USA TODAY BESTSELLING author Xavier Neal comes an unconventional, contemporary romance featuring a grumpy, wounded veteran and a quirky librarian who proves all the world needs in it is a little more compassion…

Private Academy Librarian Jaye Jenkins isn’t afraid of the green-eyed homeless man she finds digging in her trashcan one cold winter night.

He’s starving.

Just trying to survive.

Could use a bit of kindness that she can’t help but give.

And when that kindness leads to her saving him from some misplaced hatred, an unorthodox situation begins.

One that will change both of their lives.

My ARC Review:

This was a great read from start to finish, who knew that showing compassion for a fellow human being, recognising them as such, could lead to such change to both lives!

Jaye Jenkins is a cute quirky librarian, struggling to move on with her life after the death of her fiancé, who left her with lots of money and a big house, but she is yet to find herself and her happy place. Her father is the Lieutenant in police and her mother is a top notch doctor, both of whom love their daughter, her father being the one who understands her and gets along with her, whereas her mother wants what’s best for her (but mainly what’s best for herself).

Archer Cox is a homeless veteran, badly wounded in combat, honourably discharged and then lost in the system, so has never recovered fully from his injuries or his PTSD and attacks. He is looking through Jaye’s rubbish for food when she spots him and offers him some pizza – they had an instant connection that just could not be ignored.

Jaye eventually gets Archer to move into her garage to live, never imagining just how important he would become to her in just a short space of time. They spend their time talking, reading and learning all about one another, supporting each other. They try their best to get Archer a job, filling in form after form but getting nowhere, instead he renovates the house and helps the neighbours out as and when. Jaye is finally finding herself with the help and love of Archer.

A brilliant read, I was thoroughly engrossed in their story, their ride is not an easy one with plenty of obstacles to overcome, with other people’s pre-conceived notions on how they should and should not be living their life, their judgmental attitudes even from family members. There are lots of messages in the story about love, honesty, compassion and kindness in both personal relationships and family dynamics that all come together in this fabulous read. A slow burn but well worth the wait for these two when they finally get together. Well worth the read!

About Xavier Neal

Xavier Neal is a best-selling romance author who enjoys hopping from sub-genre to sub-genre like a game of Hopscotch she can’t resist.

In between writing, she loves to read (everything from romance to self-improvement books), watch movies (old and new), eat too much Tex-Mex (her Chuy’s t-shirt collection is out of control), and watch AHL hockey games LIVE (preferably against the glass whenever possible).

She currently resides happily in Texas with her bearded husband “Lumberjack”.
