Excerpt:

One phone call! One!—from General Ray Bodine three days ago stating he needed his daughter home to help him recoup from a car accident, had Selena’s commander on a mission. Lieutenant Colonel Sullivan would do anything if it meant pleasing the general he admired, including ordering Criminal Investigator Staff Sergeant Selena Bodine to take leave.

Not her. She didn’t bow to anyone, especially not dear ole Dad, a man who hadn’t seen fit to act like a father since she’d turned eight.

She thumbed through the file on her desk, checking the final paperwork on a case before following orders to go to Pearl, Ohio.

Going to her hometown to help her father wasn’t the internal battle she fought most. Seeing the place where her family fell apart gave her palpitations.

As much as she faulted Dad for his lack of parenting skills, her mother, Alice, held the award for worst parent. The day Mom walked out, the pain was so intense it numbed her from the inside out. She didn’t wish that level of agony on anyone. Though the sensation lessened some over the years, she still hadn’t shaken it. She longed for the days where love bounced off the walls as it had before Alice left.

Alice said, “I’ll see you in a few days,” as carefree as going to the store to buy a loaf of bread. Seventeen years ago!

The not knowing why she left ate at Selena. Alice didn’t give a reason why she didn’t want her daughter. Didn’t explain why she’d stopped loving her or her husband.

She rubbed her chest to alleviate the pain. It didn’t work. “I need caffeine.” She tossed her pencil on top of a file folder and snatched her mug. Not even eight and she had drunk three cups. But who counted?

Not her. She’d need several more cups to have enough strength to face her father.

Reaching the break room, she took in the empty carafe. “Darn it.” She rose on tiptoes and tugged down the coffee can from the top shelf. Times like these, she liked her above-average height. She worked on fixing the much-needed brew then rested back on the counter, listened to the hissing of the pot, and waited.

Freshwater Pearl subdivision may be a place she dreaded, but visiting Pearl gave her an excited rush to see her sisters. Any time she could see them was a good day. Pearl had gifted her with the three most amazing friends a person could possibly have. Their bond so strong and unique, she’d made up a saying about them.

Each sister fought demons, and fought them well. Yet together, their weaknesses turned to strength. They empowered, inspired, and set records to what girl code exemplified. What true friendship meant.
