“But you’ll deliver the message to the Agassi,” Samira said, slyly, “so you can look at him.”

Naime glared sideways at her. “I am allowed to look,” she said crisply. She wasn’t the only one. She had witnessed her attendants and other women in the receiving hall staring or failing at their attempts not to. Half of it was because he looked a great deal different than anyone else, with the Odokan lineage evident in his features. Some of it was because he was a new face. But the simple fact was the man was darkly handsome and magnetic. And a great deal more pleasant to look at than anyone else in the palace.

“Yes, but I’m not certain I’ve ever seen you look with quite so much…dedication.” Samira laughed when Naime bumped into her in rebuke.

“I find him interesting,” Naime said. “He is easy to speak with. Besides, even you must find him worth looking at?”

Samira gave the small, sad smile she did when her heart wasn’t in it, and Naime regretted mentioning it at all. A Fifth House mage’s love was often consuming, and that was true of Samira, even if the person she loved did not deserve her and was forever out of reach.

“He thinks you’re worth looking at as well,” Samira changed the subject, her honey eyes crinkling at the corners. “He couldn’t take his eyes off you at the guild hall. You should have seen his face when you finished with the Grand Vizier.”

“I saw.” Warm, reluctant pride spread through her chest. Not because he looked at her, but because if felt as if he had actually seen her. Men looked at her. They always had. She knew she was beautiful, the way she knew she was a woman, and a princess. It was not something she took pride in, it was something to be used as a tool. Her mother had taught her that. She had also taught her it would be fleeting; that she must have other assets and tools at her disposal when the beauty inevitably faded, or risk losing her belief in herself, which was the only gift she truly had. He had recognized something other than her appearance, and that, in her experience, was rare.
